About
Our Story:
For their Senior Project, former Editors-in-Chief Maddie Mohamadi ’23, Sofia Gaviria ’23 and Irene Zhao ’23 designed the first-ever Horizon website, propelling the almost-fifty-year-old school newspaper into the digital age. After long discussions with the Sidwell administration, the three editors were able to reach an agreement with the school ensuring that Horizon would uphold its standards of only publishing appropriate, non-defamatory and excellent writing upon shifting to this digital format. By dismantling the barriers previously imposed on Horizon, we hope to increase accessibility and reach a wider audience, even beyond that of the Sidwell community, to both display the many achievements of our school and student body, while also maintaining an inquisitive spirit through constantly questioning the issues that plague our country and campus. This website aims to invigorate Horizon’s unwavering commitment to distinguished student journalism as well as community engagement with its published works, upholding the newspaper’s fifty-year-old legacy.
Editorial Statement:
Campus journalism offers a special way of looking at Sidwell Friends and the people who give it life every day. A newspaper can make accessible, engaging and influential those facts and theories among us that might otherwise remain opaque, obscure or hidden.
Horizon’s 2024-2025 staff aspires to demonstrate in these pages the continuing relevance of words in print (and now online), and the scribe’s mode of observing Sidwell at work and at leisure: to do so candidly and tastefully, with a good-natured tolerance for the likelihood of sometimes sharply differing perspectives and in harmony with our best understanding of the law.
All this we propose to do while respecting the rights of our readers, correspondents, advertisers, advisers and writers of letters to the editors. We aim to produce a free and responsible Horizon.
Our Policy:
Horizon will not publish any writing considered to be defamatory, in poor taste or inappropriate. All articles are subject to final review by the faculty adviser. Opinion and review-style articles reflect the views of their respective writers.
