In January, the Sidwell Friends administration canceled school twice due to snow — first on Jan. 16 and second on Jan. 19. Due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the snow days resulted in a two-day workweek.

On Jan. 2, Upper School Principal Mamadou Guèye announced the departure of Dean of Students and Assistant Principal of Student Life Michael Woods after 21 years at Sidwell Friends. Woods, who joined Sidwell as a history teacher in 2002 before taking on the role of Dean of Students in 2011, has been on sabbatical this year studying leadership in education and the military.

The long-awaited conclusion to the four-month-long Screen Actor’s Guild strike arrived on Thursday, Nov. 9, after a deal was reached between the studios and SAG-AFTRA members. The strike began on July 14 when the actors guild joined the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) in protest against the studios. After the screenwriters agreed in late September, the actors remained on the outs with their industry producer counterparts.

On Oct. 22, singer Mira Awad and the Jerusalem Youth Chorus (JYC) conducted a virtual performance for the Sidwell community. The performance was held in response to the recent war between Israel and Hamas as a way to help community members musically process current events and spark constructive dialogue.

On Oct. 29, runners worldwide gathered in Arlington, Va., for the 48th annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). A well known 26.2-mile race with over 23,000 registered runners, the MCM is managed by active-duty marines and volunteers.
