The 2026 Australian Open began on Jan. 18 at Melbourne Park, marking the season’s first Grand Slam tournament. Despite multiple delays and rescheduled matches, the tournament produced record-setting performances, including Novak Djokovic’s 400th career Grand Slam match win, and culminated in Carlos Alcaraz capturing his first Australian Open title.
Under extreme temperatures, Melbourne — currently in the height of summer — has recorded daily highs of 30 to 40 degrees Celsius. The heat increased physical demands on athletes and prompted tournament organizers to implement the Extreme Heat Policy, temporarily suspending play on outside courts. As a result, multiple matches were paused, delayed or rescheduled throughout the tournament.
The 2026 Australian Open marked a big historical moment in 38-year-old Novak Djokovic’s tennis career. He achieved his 400th grand slam win and surpassed Roger Federer’s record for the most match wins at the Australian Open. He has now won 102 games at the Australian Open, making him the first player to achieve over 100 victories in the singles category at three grand slam tournaments: the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.
Despite this accomplishment, Djokovic struggled in his quarterfinal match. Lorenzo Musetti, the number five seed from Italy, was only one set away from defeating Djokovic, leading the match 6-3, 6-4.
Musetti said he felt pain in his right adductor towards the beginning of the second set, but continued to play through it. The pain worsened as the match progressed, and he was forced to retire in the middle of the third set.
“I honestly have no words to describe how I’m feeling right now and how tough it is for me,” he said. “To be forced to retire is something that, of course, I will never imagine. Of course, it’s really painful.”
The final score was 3-6, 4-6, 3-1, allowing Djokovic to advance to the semi-finals.
“He was by far the better player, I was on my way home,” Djokovic acknowledged during his on-court interview. “He should have been a winner today, there’s no doubt.”
On the other side of the men’s singles bracket, Jannik Sinner, the number two seed, defeated an American fan favorite, Ben Shelton, in their quarter-finals match.
Sinner defeated Shelton in three straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4..
Advancing to the semifinals, Alcarez faced a longer match against German Alexander Zverev, stretching over five close sets. Alcarez eventually won the match, with the final score being 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5.
On the other side of the bracket, Djokovic defeated Sinner to advance to the finals. The five-set game ended at 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the final round, Alcarez defeated Djokovoci with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5.
Claiming his first Australian Open title, 22-year-old Alcaraz also became the youngest man in tennis history to complete a career grand slam.
“I want to talk about Novak. He deserves some ovation. What you’re doing is really inspiring, not only for tennis players but for all the people around the world,” Alcarez said in a post-game interview. “It’s been an honor sharing the court, watching you play, so thank you very much for what you’re doing. It is really inspiring to me.”
