The Trump Administration announced it would extend the National Guard’s deployment in Washington.
First deployed in August 2025, their stay was extended multiple times. The total number of deployed troops is around 2,500, of whom about 700 are members of the Washington National Guard. The remainder are from states led by Republican governors that support the initiative. The troops have been employed to support crime-reduction efforts and provide armed support roles alongside law enforcement. According to the White House, they have also contributed to greater sanitation and urban enhancement projects, aiding with trash collection, laying mulch and maintaining public spaces.
The decision also comes around two months following the Nov. 6 shooting against two members of the West Virginia National Guard. Sarah Beckstrom was shot and killed, while Andrew Wolfe was shot and is currently recovering.
Sophomore Emmett Bailen stated that he sees them every day. He added that he thought that the Guard seemed “like friendly people that don’t want to be here [in Washington].”
U.S. District Judge Mia M. Cobb ruled the deployment of the National Guard as violating the law. She ordered the Trump Administration to end the deployment. However, the deployment remained in place after the shooting of Beckstrom and Wolfe occurred a few days later, prompting judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to allow it to continue while the court considers the case.
The Trump Administration also discussed employing military force in Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland. In June, the administration temporarily took control of the California National Guard, deploying around 4,000 to Los Angeles in addition to around 700 active-duty Marines.
This decision came in response to protests in the city against raids performed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Trump Administration has also come into conflict with issues regarding the Posse Comitatus Act outside of Washington, which prohibits the National Guard from executing civilian law enforcement, in addition to local officials objecting to the shift in control of the forces.
Sophomore Henry Richards said that the Trump Administration “could [instead] be deploying [the Guard] to cities that actually need the support.”
Similar jurisdictional constraints do not apply in Washington. The District is legally under federal control under the Home Rule Act, which allows Washington citizens to establish a limited independent government, with ultimate authority resting with Congress. However, local activists and advocates have said that the Guard’s deployment encroaches on Washington’s limited governance and improperly uses the local metropolitan police force.
Bailen also highlighted that their mission is “costing a lot of money.” Officials estimate that the Washington deployment could cost up to $1 million per day, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. He says that the government “could [instead] be devoting resources to giving people healthcare, fixing [the] agricultural system [and] so many other things.” He cited the government’s denial of an extension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) subsidies.
“There are people in need,” he said. Washington has experienced a decline in consumer spending and demand due to the Guard’s presence. According to Brookings’ analyses, visitor spending showed no significant impact, continuing a trend of consistent decline over multiple years, while local consumer behavior saw numerous changes. For the first half of the year, consumer spending in Washington and the greater metropolitan area increased, followed by lower rates in June and July. After the deployment of the guard in August, spending both in and around the District decreased, but the change was seen much more dramatically for consumption within city boundaries. The rate of decline in district spending was around two to three times that of the greater metropolitan area, with an 8.3% decrease in September, compared to only 4.1% when including the surrounding areas.
