Senior Best Couple – Gabi Green and Clayton Gary
Gabi and Clayton’s story began in the spring of their freshman year when injuries landed both of them in the athletic trainer’s room — Gabi was recovering from ACL surgery, and Clayton was dealing with a misdiagnosed calf issue. With time to kill, Gabi and Clayton struck up a friendship. By Clayton’s birthday in October, they were officially dating.
More than two years later, Gabi and Clayton describe their relationship as one built on empathy, communication and sacrifice. On their anniversary, they both unknowingly wrote nearly identical messages in their cards: their favorite part of their relationship was their ability to navigate conflict through conversation, without fighting but with understanding.
Clayton admires Gabi’s relentless determination, whether in academics, embracing challenges or simply making time for fun. “She never settles for less even if more is exhausting,” he said affectionately. Gabi, in turn, respects Clayton’s work ethic, his focus and dedication even when no one is watching.
Some might point to their similarities — in their shared discipline as athletes — or their differences, with Clayton being more reserved and Gabi outgoing, as the reason for their compatibility. But what truly makes them a perfect match is how they support each other in reaching their goals.
Junior Best Couple – Sophie Haar and Graham Bertele
Though Horizon featured this pair last year, they once again received the most nominations, reflecting their status as an iconic duo. Sophie and Graham met in kindergarten at WIS. However, they didn’t start dating until the end of freshman year after Graham came to Sidwell and finally felt courageous enough to talk to Sophie.
Sophie said that since they have no classes or free periods together, they try to see each other outside of school and during breaks. When hanging out, they enjoy watching “trashy” reality TV, specifically Netflix’s “Too Hot to Handle.” They also enjoy taking walks around Graham’s Georgetown neighborhood or in the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks.
When asked what advice they would give for a long and successful relationship, Graham described the importance of communication and being “open and honest.” He continued, saying that no issues can be resolved without sincere discussion. While Sophie and Graham have disparate interests, their success lies in their ability to make their time together count.
Freshman Best Couple – Sienna Morigi and Marko Guenov
Like many great love stories, Sienna and Marko’s began in Mr. Sotela’s middle school advisory. Similar to Sophie and Graham, they attended the same primary school, but didn’t formally meet until later. They liked each other right away. “He was always there when I needed someone to talk to,” said Sienna. Marko said that the thing he noticed immediately was Sienna’s friendly energy. Since then, they have been inseparable.
Though they are busy, Sienna and Marko work hard to make time for their relationship. Their favorite things to do together include going out to dinner, cooking together and watching movies. Marko always makes a point to surprise Sienna with gestures and gifts. “My favorite thing about Sienna is her sense of humor and how she can actually make me laugh,” Marko said.
When asked about the most valuable element of their relationship, Sienna and Marko agreed that understanding each other’s perspectives to solve problems is key.
